The walk is a symphony of families, people with lived experience, mental health providers, organizations, entertainers, mindfulness practitioners, and educators. Everyone is brought together as one, along the historic Sunnyside Boardwalk in Toronto, to share a mindful walk of awareness  and celebrate that together we are making waves for those that struggle and their families. Last year's walk included music, speeches, a mindfulness bridge walk, mindfulness meditation on the beach and awareness passport activities.

Who will be there?

Asante Haughton - Inspirational Speaker and Mental Health Advocate.

Passionate about social justice and equality, Asante Haughton is a national award winning mental health advocate dedicated to endeavours aimed at building stronger communities. He is a poet, thinker and speaker who believes in people, global interconnectivity, and positive personal change. Not only has Asante made several TV appearances and been featured in the documentary, "Three Voices," he has spoken internationally, presenting in Canada, the United States, Colombia and most recently, Ireland. In 2017, Asante made noise as a TEDx speaker and was recognized by CAMH as one of the top 150 Difference Makers in mental health in Canada. When not trying to save the world, Asante can be found laughing at his own jokes, Netflix'ing, watching cartoons, and being frustrated with Toronto sports teams. Though Asante can be pretty laid back, he is loud about his advocacy and drive for change as he aims to deliver a message of social awareness, justice, community betterment, and above all, hope.

Making waves on Mental Health by building environments for the advancement of life coping skills.

 

Mission

To lead a mental health reform by promoting awareness for the need of early prevention, recognition, timely intervention and access to affordable treatment of individuals with emotional dysregulation. Through our efforts, we will bring positive changes to create a more validating environment for everyone by::

  • Eliminating the stigma around emotion dysregulation
  • Promoting access to affordable treatment services leading to improved quality of life
  • Disseminating effective life coping and interrelationship skills
  • Informing and mobilizing family and friends to seek the skills training needed to support loved ones when they struggle

 

Sasha’s Story

Sasha

On June 17th 2011, Sasha Menu Courey lost her battle to Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and died by suicide at the age of 20. Although she was a scholarship athlete and a gifted student with a promising future, the pain associated with the  disorder was too great and the system failed to support her needs.  Sasha struggled to understand why the treatment that was “air to breathe” was so expensive and difficult to locate.

 

What is BPD?

BPD is a serious mental disorder centered around the inability to manage emotions effectively. The symptoms include: fear of abandonment, impulsivity, anger, bodily self-harm, suicidal ideation, and chaotic relationships.

 

How prevalent is BPD?

Is it estimated that about 2 to 6% of the population is afflicted by BPD.  It is more common than schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

 

How is BPD related to suicide and self-injury?

10% of adults with BPD die by suicide
55-85% of adults with BPD self-injure their bodies
33% of youth who die by suicide have features of BPD
